Halfway through photographing the field hockey festival last weekend, (see previous post), there was a learn to play session where families could come out and give it a try. My family did just that. The mascot from the Peterborough Petes OHL Hockey Team, named Roger came out too.
For those who don’t know our youngest son William, let me give you a bit of background. William is a chatty little guy, who loves to scream and make others laugh… except when he’s around people that aren’t his immediate family. He doesn’t make a peep around strangers. He usually just stares with a blank expression on his face. He does however love dogs like no other kid I’ve seen and when Roger stepped onto the field, both my wife and I were sure that this would not end well.
We were dead wrong. William bolted right up to Roger and gave him a great big hug. Roger retaliated by picking up and tickling William. At one point, Roger was 100 yards away on the other side of the field and William was sitting on the bleachers looking for him. We pointed him out and William got up and started running towards him. By the way, 100 yards is a long way to run for a 2 year old, so once Roger saw William, he dropped his field hockey stick and started running towards William. They met about halfway where Roger picked up William and swung him around. It was like something out of a cheesy romantic comedy.
Later, they sat on the bleachers while William talked Rogers ears off before saying goodbye. I don’t think I’ve ever seem William so happy and am glad we have these photos to remember the occasion.
